"By the pricking of my thumbs, Something wicked this way comes."
GENERAL NAME: Rupert Wick NICKNAMES: Don't you dare. His siblings call him Ru and he hates it with a passion. AGE/DOB: 15 ; March 13 BLOOD STATUS: Half-blood GENDER/PRONOUNS: Male ; he/him/his SEXUALITY: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Currently identifies as pansexual, but it seems to be more just so he can say something than anything else. He has a lot of fleeting crushes and doesn't think much of them or what it means about his sexuality. HOMETOWN: Vancouver, BC, Canada
CONCEPT: Pushy, dramatic drama nerd enjoys gossip, hates not being taken seriously.
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Rupert's appearance is important because no one is going to cast him in lead roles if he's gross!! So he takes very good care of his skin, his hair, his clothes - some of this is an attempt to appear mature, but a lot is just that he cares about what he looks like. He wears his uniform to regulation. His hair is generally shaved on the sides and longer on the top, and Rupert is careful to keep it always a little styled at least. The young Ribbonfin generally wears contacts, but he does have glasses he wears about 1/3rd of the time. Mostly when he's trying to look smart.
Out of uniform Rupert can get a little... rambunctious in his manner of dress. It's all well put together, but he can often go for louder patterns or colors than most would, ties with more casual clothes, and can often be seen wearing slightly outdated articles - suspenders, bow ties, hats.
HEIGHT: 5'7"
PB: Jordan Fisher
PERSONALITYLIKES: Shakespeare. Theatre. Acting. Playing piano. Dancing. Bossing people around. Being in control of a situation. Gossip. Purple. DISLIKES: Sports. The outdoors (and yet he's at camp school). Getting dirt under his nails :((( Not being taken seriously. Waiting. Queueing. Indecision in others. Others gossiping about him. PERSONALITY: Rupert is an open book, and is happy to let everyone know; he shares his opinions widely and rarely makes an effort to hide his emotions in the moment, even if they're fleeting. Because of this he's not hard to read and generally not hard to understand. He puts his passions forward clearly (theatre, mostly), doesn't shy away from making decisions, and knows what he wants out of life. The indecisiveness of the trout is not a personality trait he possesses by any stretch of the imagination. Much of this decisiveness manifests itself in impatience. which leads him to push others around him to move things along; he can get bossy if things aren’t going fast enough for him. He’s the kid that raises his hand to answer quickly after a question is posed to the class so that they can just move on, please.
Really, Rupert has passed the realm of decisiveness and has moved into being pushy almost all of the time. He loves to tell others what to do and actually looks for people he can be particularly controlling of. Becoming a prefect has only given him license to see his pushy nature as school-sanctioned. Still, Rupert doesn’t want to rock the boat too much – he’ll be bossy and push, but only up to people’s boundaries. Give him an inch and he’ll take a mile… if you’ll let him. Too much push back from someone pacifies him and brings out a more agreeable side.
Still, in general he wants things his way. Ironically, Rupert will often try to act as a go-between that preaches compromise… if it’s not him that’s compromising. He's very just-so about his things and his space, and while Rupert is fine with discomfort when it's for a cause he cares about (working long hours on a play, studying for a class he cares about), any discomfort encountered around something he doesn't care for is UNBEARABLE. He hates camping, hates physical exertion that he hasn't chosen for himself, and is the most pathetic child when he's ill. He's very much a lover of creature comforts.
Also an avid lover of theatre, Rupert seems to embody much of the over-the-top aesthetic of the stage, even when he's not on it. He's overly dramatic and adores spectacles and some good gossip; this isn't for any particularly nefarious reason. He's just nosy. As with many things in his life, however, Rupert has a very clear double standard - he hates when the tables are turned and he’s the one being gossiped about.
Unsurprisingly, Rupert is an extrovert and thus loves talking to people, interacting with people, being around people... almost anything involving people. He finds company preferable to being alone, and will seek out others almost constantly, even if they're not people he can boss around. He considers most individuals he encounters as surface level friends and will treat them with friendly familiarity if he has no quarrels with them (though he will temporarily turn on anyone).
For his closest friends, however, he's a fiercely loyal companion when it comes to defending against outside forces, and will often back up these friends even if they're clearly in the wrong. This defense, of course, doesn't extend to tiffs with him; when Rupert feels slighted there's very little that can talk him down from offense. At the very least, however, he's quick to forgive and often will go back to acting as though nothing had happened the next day, even if previously he had claimed that someone had ruined his life, or something equally dramatic.
In the end, despite billing himself as what-you-see-is-what-you-get, there's a subconscious chip on Rupert's shoulder, brought on by parents who just weren't engaged in his interests, even if they made best efforts to always show up. He’s constantly striving to be taken seriously as an actor, as an intelligent individual, as someone who is coming into adulthood. Ironically, Rupert can get petulant and pouty if that’s not going his way. He often thinks his classmates are very immature but remains chipper and smiley in his judgement. He tries not to curse because that, too, is immature. It's another aspect of being a prefect that he loves - the feeling of validation it gives him.
SKILLSLANGUAGES SPOKEN: English, a few French phrases he learned to impress his brother-in-law. PATRONUS: A peacock. Rupert cannot successfully cast a full-bodied patronus. SKILLS: ❖ Acting - Though Rupert may seem like he's talking himself up to compensate, he is actually a fairly skilled actor. He can sometimes ham it up a little too much, but he takes direction well and can settle into an acceptable level of intensity with a bit of help. He learns lines well, is fairly versatile in terms of character types, and will put whatever time in necessary to nail his part. He's still learning, of course, but his dream of becoming a well known stage actor doesn't really seem that out of reach. He dismisses screen acting as inferior, but still technically an option. ❖ Theatre Tech - While not something he's been directly involved in that much, Rupert has spent enough time in smaller productions that he has some skill in various technical parts of theatre. Costumes, hair, and make-up are his most skilled area - he can patch clothes quickly and do basic make-up, and is moderately skillful in wig and hair styling. The one area that he's above mediocre in is actually hair cutting. ❖ Piano - Fairly adept at playing piano, but he doesn't care that much about it so it's not a focus for him. He's been taking lessons since he was young and is happy to help out singers if they need some accompaniment. ❖ Dance - Rupert's parents were both ballroom dancers by trade, so it's no surprise that Rupert is a very good dancer. While mostly trained in ballroom, he's quick to pick up other styles and can emulate others fairly well.
HISTORYFAMILY MEMBERS: ❖ Contessa Bumblesnuff Wick | Mother | Secretary at Bumblesnuff Brooms Contessa is a very loving mother, but she's also very involved in her job and very, very flighty. She can only focus on one thing at a time, and in general that thing is work. Since it's her father's company she often works outside of normal office hours, leaving her constantly only halfway paying attention to her children.
❖ Bertrand Bumblesnuff | Grandfather | Owner of Bumblesnuff Brooms A kind but driven man, Bertrand is simultaneously stingy and generous with his vast fortune. He subsidized his daughter's income when she was a dancer so she could pursue her dreams and he paid for all of his grandchildren's educations at Gooseberry, but he doesn't give lavish presents and he refuses to act as an ATM. His company, Bumblesnuff Brooms, produces very niche and specialized brooms. They're generally incredibly fast and sensitive, but they cost an arm and a leg. Rupert has zero interest in his grandfather's business because he has no interest in flying on brooms or in any sports. Whatever, grandpa, thanks for the tuition!
❖ Reginald Wick Jr. | Father | Professional Ballroom Dancer Reginald is even more flighty than his wife - a boisterous, fun-loving man who is trying to not dip into his trust fund to prove to himself that he can make it on his own... even though he'll happily take money from his wife's father. It's not intentionally disingenuous, he just sees it as a very different thing! When his wife left dancing professionally he continued on; his new dance partner (Elena Sandadder) is a close friend of the family and is around often. ❖ Reginald "Reg" Wick III | Older Brother | 21 | R&D at Bumblesnuff Brooms An Azurcrest alum, Reg is an attractive, bright, happy young man that spends far too much time at work because he loves researching ways to improve the speed of brooms. He's been engaged twice, and is currently single. A very eligible bachelor. Reg is a complete bro in terms of his mannerisms and likely has a trophy for being a drinking game MVP.
❖ Regina "Reggie" Wick | Older Sister | 20 | Dance Instructor Ebonhide alum. She completely followed in the footsteps of her parents and put her all into dance - she now works at an exclusive dance studio in Vancouver, teaching very rich children how to ballroom dance. Beautiful, intelligent, and somewhat more put together than her other family members. A little conniving, but unbelievably charismatic. Married a year ago to the owner of said dance studio, a rich, 43 year old French wizard.
HISTORY: The youngest, unintended child of successful ballroom dancing pair Contessa and Reginald Wick Jr., Rupert was born in Vancouver, BC into a very comfortable lifestyle. He enjoyed a childhood surrounded by comforts and artistic expressions, with much of his days filled with attending his parents' practices and competitions, enjoying plays, concerts, and art exhibitions, and learning how to play piano and dance. Art, after all, was life to his family, and so his appreciation for it was built up at a very young age.
Though he was materially and culturally well-provided for thanks to his parents' prize money, subsidized by his maternal grandfather, Rupert was not wealthy in terms of deep interaction. Both Contessa and Reginald Jr. are flighty, eccentric, and distracted by their own lives, and while generally indulgent they rarely showed much interest in whatever any of their children were doing. Though Rupert began piano recitals and doing small plays at the age of seven, his parents couldn't be drawn away from their lives enough to give full attention, even when he was that young. Rupert's siblings, Reg and Reggie, proved themselves to be capable, independent children, but young Rupert often was left wanting in terms of engaging attention and was a little bit of a troublemaker as a child because of it. He threw tantrums when asked to do anything he wasn't excited about; at least until he figured out that didn't get him much.
When he was about 11, Rupert’s mother retired from ballroom dancing to take a job as a secretary for her father’s broom making company while his father continued on in the world of professional ballroom dancing. She wanted more stability, but also genuinely thought it would give her more time to spend with her quickly growing children. Nothing in the family's dynamic really changed, though - both parents were still incredibly busy, still incredibly unengaged in their children's lives (even if they made some efforts), and still traveled around often.
Young Rupert found he enjoyed acting more than piano, and while he continued the latter he only pressed his parents to attend his plays. His parents tried - they came to every show he was in if they weren't out of town, but they were often distracted, on their phones or even occasionally working on paperwork in the dim lighting of the theatre. It was as much as they could muster - it was something, but not enough for the energetic young Rupert. He made the best of it, though, and threw his all into theatre as he grew, finding a place where he got the validation and attention he needed. Even if his parents didn't care, that didn't mean he couldn't.
Rupert watched his siblings grow and studied their independence without being able to emulate it very well - they could, for whatever reason, exist in a vacuum, but he couldn't. He needed interaction and gossip and validation, and he pulled this from his classmates what he could. Rupert proved himself to be as popular as his siblings had been during grade school at a local, private K-12 called Kitsilano Bay Prep. While Rupert was not charismatic in quite the same way as Reg and Reggie, he courted favor when necessary and pushed others into his circle when possible. His energetic nature and his habit of treating even strangers like old friends drew many to him, and he felt somewhat at home. He also spent much of his time endearing himself to teachers as much as he could, and within no time he had definitely taken up his brother and sister's mantle.
This semi-popularity and closeness with teachers wasn't enough, though, as Rupert wanted more - he wanted more space to feel important, and somewhere to nurture his ambitions of being a stage actor. Both his siblings had attended Gooseberry, something that initially he hadn't even entertained the idea of. Though he was uninterested in the whole camping aspect of the school, Rupert soon saw the value in following in the footsteps of his siblings (maybe his parents would engage IN THAT), as well as attending a more prestigious and smaller school. He applied, was accepted, and started his freshman year.
Adjusting to Gooseberry came easy to the gregarious and open boy, especially because he wasn't overly concerned with having close friends initially. Though it took a little bit of time to build up some of the external validation he needed, the specialized feel of the school carried him through some of the transition. He sought out students he could push around (all well-meaning, of course) and made a point to take challenging classes and speak up in them. He proved himself to be capable and decisive, even if the latter was typically not a trait attributed to his house.
As things became more and more serious at Gooseberry, Rupert continued along. Thriving on drama meant that he took all of the antics with Anonymous in stride, and even though the end of the year was obviously intense, they weren't enough to spook him - nothing happened to him or any of his friends, and anyways MACUSA said it was safe, right? Though his parents weren't initially quite convinced, Rupert presented his arguments in a convincing enough way that they agreed to let him return.
SCHOOL YEAR: Sophomore HOUSE: Ribbonfin SORTING: Rupert is not your typical Ribbonfin, and was actually heavily courted by Ebonhide before he chose to follow the trout. While on the surface he may seem like the antithesis of what a Ribbonfin should be (pushy, decisive, and forward), his desire to only push as far as he can without causing too much upset was pointed out by the Ribbonfin emblem, along with his willingness to forgive. Though his stubbornness factored into the trout's argument as well, the draw of being seen as mature enough to forgive and smart enough to respect boundaries was enough. Despite his somewhat unconventional sorting it didn't take long for him to decide. WAND: Fir, Veela Hair, 14", sturdy but not exactly rigid. Ostentatious - this wand has been heavily worked into smooth waves covered with small, intricate designs. It's very well-cared for. FAMILIAR: None, though he has a 14 year old white standard poodle at home named Ruby. CLASSES: Charms, Potions, Transfiguration, Hermeticism, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Wizard Literature. ADVANCED STUDY: Divination - this garbage child sweet boy loves the acquisition of information, and what better way to get that then to consult divinitive techniques? He takes this class very seriously, and also always wears his glasses to it. While divination is not necessarily relevant in terms of his ~*end goal*~ of being an actor, Rupert finds it interesting and as a way to further his general knowledge and sees it as a serious area of study. He has a particular strength in scrying, but not much else; the more interpretive forms of divination (tarot, tea leaf reading, etc.) often elude him. SENIOR PROJECT: Rupert intends to perform a monologue by a well-known wizard playwright, but he's still at a loss as to what he specifically wants to do, or how he's going to dress it up to make it especially spectacular. ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Rupert is a very bright boy, but his impatience can occasionally lead him to trip up on exams. In class he's engaging, if only because he can't stand for things to sit for too long in silence. He wants to impress teachers so he often goes out of his way to be extra helpful. Look what a good student he is!! He's especially interested in impressing Ms. Vector and Mr. Chettri and always wears his glasses to Hermeticism and Divination.
EXTRACURRICULARS: ❖ Prefect: This bossy child was overjoyed when he learned he was made prefect. Not only does it validate the notion that he's mature, it also means that he has school-sanctioned power to boss his classmates around! Perfect. ❖ Drama: This is what Rupert views his true calling in life as. While he prefers plays, especially works of Shakespeare and other equally old pieces, he will scramble to be in any production he can. He has a bit of experience in helping out on crew and will do his part to help where he's needed. ❖ LARP: Rupert takes LARP very seriously because, ultimately, it's acting. While initially a little hesitant to join for fear of others not respecting the art, he couldn't stay away. It's just too tempting to have an excuse to be in character when he's not working on a production.
